Having lived in the Buduburam Refugee camp for almost a decade now, music developed to become Harry Selassie’s rescue from the turmoil and vices he was surrounded by. Harry Selassie believes that music is a force which should constantly evolve; hence it demands that he is creative in every way possible.
Born in Monrovia to a Liberian mother and Ghanaian father, Harry Selassie grew up in a home where both parents were lovers of the art, allowing him to appreciate a variety of genres at a very early age. As far back as he could remember, he had a natural ability to sing along to songs from the sound system at home, to the admiration of family and friends who urged him to enter the singing competitions on television.
Harry Selassie is quick to point out that Soul, R&B and Hip Hop will always be his strong hold. At core a Michael Jackson fan, he was also influenced by a number of other artistes including James Arthur, Chronixx, J Cole, Usher, 2Face, Lemar, Tyrese, Musiq Soulchild and a lot more. He begun stage performances by entering into various popular competitions starting 2013 and up until 2016, when he entered the Airtel Trace music competition and came 1st runner up. Harry Selassie has spent his last 4 years being a singer and songwriter associated with the Afro Harmony band. As far as music expression is concerned, Harry Selassie fuses Liberian and Ghanaian pidgin into the suburban lingo his generation navigates.
