How Liberia has been making history in Africa

The Republic of Liberia, formerly a colony of the American Colonization Society, declares its independence.
Under pressure from Britain, the United States hesitantly accepted Liberian sovereignty, making the West African nation the
first democratic republic in African history. A constitution modeled after the U.S. Constitution was approved,
and in 1848 Joseph Jenkins Roberts was elected Liberia’s first president who was literally white.

How Liberia came up with the idea of the OAU now call AU

To accentuate this idea, the late President William V.S. Tubman convened what is historically known as the Sanniquellie Conference which was attended by the then President of neighboring Guinea, Sekou Toure, who drove from his country to Liberia and the late Prime Minister of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah. The President, according to research, organized the Sanniquellie conference, few months after attending a conference on African unity held in Accra, Ghana in April 1958, during which time he was the only head of state who attended the eight-nation Conference of independent African States. At the Conference, the late President, sensing the importance of African Unity, reiterated these ideas in his opening statement when he, among other things said, “Through hardship and humiliation we, as “President Tubman On African Unity,” within whose framework African countries could cooperate socially, culturally, economically and educationally without any state surrendering its sovereignty to other members of the Community.” Further elaborating his ideas on African unity, President Tubman, following the Sanniquellie conference, stated in an Address to the nation on July 27, 1959, on the occasion of the celebration of Liberia’s 112th independence anniversary, pointed out that unity in Africa was “absolutely necessary for the total liberation of the continent.”Africans have demonstrated the qualities of patience, perseverance, and endurance. I believe that through the admission of such qualities we are destined to assume a new role in world affairs. The late President then unveil his entire
idea about the OAU now call AU.

How Liberia produced the first and only African World best player in soccer through George Weah

In 1995 he was named FIFA World Player of the Year and won the Ballon d’Or, becoming the first African player to win these awards. In 1989, 1994 and 1995, he was named the African Footballer of the Year, and in 1996, he was named African Player of the Century. Known for his acceleration, speed, and dribbling ability, in addition to his goalscoring and finishing, Weah was described by FIFA as “the precursor of the multi-functional strikers of today”. In 2004, he was named by Pelé in the FIFA 100 list of the world’s greatest living players.

Now Liberia is making History by electing the World first soccer player as Head of State

This small nation “Liberia” is always at the lead when it comes to making history in Africa. Liberia is now given the chance to write political history once again — this time becoming the first country ever to elect a former professional soccer player as head of state. It should be no surprise that this is happening after reading few of the historical happenings this little country has made.

Little History of Goerge Weah

He’s Known as “King George” by his fans in soccer-obsessed West Africa, Weah was born in the Monrovia slum of Clara Town. He grew up playing with local clubs for $10 a match before becoming one of the first young African soccer players to catch the eye of European talent scouts. Signed to AS Monaco for just 12,000 British pounds in 1988.
Soccer talent alone, though, does not explain the depth of Weah’s political appeal. Even as he enjoyed a soccer player’s playboy lifestyle, with Porsche sports cars and a home in a gated community in Florida, he never forgot his home country as it lapsed into
civil war. In 1997, at the height of his soccer career, he became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, promoting vocational training for former child soldiers. He also lavished cash on scholarships and soccer training programs for Liberians and coached the national team during the presidency of Charles Taylor, who ruled from 1997 to 2003 and was later convicted of war crimes.

This is a man born to be a leader, George Weah refuses to close his eyes on the sufferings of his people. Though Liberia just putting the pieces together but Weah knows there’s a lot left to be done.
